SAVING CHINATOWN
PART 1: PHILLY ASIAN HISTORIES
JACINTA YELLAND / ASIAN ARTS INITIATIVE / PHILADELPHIA ASIAN PERFORMING ARTISTS
Philly Asian Histories was a 2-part pop-up multidisciplinary performance series title that worked to give voice to Philadelphia's Asian American heritage.
In Part 1, Philadelphia Asian Performing Artists (PAPA) transformed Asian Arts Initiative's 3 story building into a living museum. Musicians, dancers, theatre artists, and more will create individual pieces that bring to life select moments in Philadelphia's Asian History through their respective mediums.
SAVING CHINATOWN
Created/Directed by Jacinta Yelland.
Performed by Annie Fang.
For Philly Asian Histories : Part 1 I created Saving Chinatown, a living installation that captured the essence of the 'Save Chinatown' movement.
Since the 1960s a host of urban renewal projects have threatened the existence of Philadelphia's Chinatown. Using memorabilia and other charged objects from the stories of Chinatown community members, Saving Chinatown recreates the peaceful battleground where Cecilia Moy Yep, George Moy, Mary Yee and other community activists launched the 'Save Chinatown' movement that saved this historic neighborhood.
A special thanks to Mary Yee, Harry Leong & Philadelphia Suns, Henry Chow & Sang Kee Peking Duck House, Betsy Lee, Melody Wong, Cecilia Moy Yep,
Penn Lions, Rodney Atienza - Atienza Photography, Holy Redeemer Church & School, AAI, PAPA, Annie Fang
and my friends and family for making this project possible.
